Course Overview
Media studies is a discipline and field of study that deals with the content, history and effects of various media; in particular, the mass media (Newspapers, magazines, television, film, the music industry, video games and advertising). Media Studes may draw on traditions from both the social sciences and the humanities, but mostly from its core disciplines of mass communication, communication, communication sciences, and communication studies. Media Studies incorporates both academic and practical components.
Media Studies will allow you to study the media in an academic context and apply the knowledge and understanding gained in the process of creating your own media production. Media Studies is designed to widen your intellectual horizons through the analysis of a wide range of media forms and contexts. Media Studies also enables you to develop a wider understanding and appreciation of the media in both a historical and contemporary context. You will engage confidently with critical and theoretical approaches from the perspective of both analytical consumer and producer of media products. Media Studies should inspire you to continue learning beyond the confines of the classroom as well as developing personal and interpersonal skills which will serve them well both in Higher Education and un the workplace. Media Studies offers a broad, coherent and rigorous course of study that ensures that all types of learners can fulfil your potential, preparing them to make informed decisions about further study and progression to AS Level and A Level, vocational study or employment.
